WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Nationals took a lead into the sixth inning Wednesday afternoon, but the Toronto Blue Jays answered with five unanswered runs over the next three frames to escape Nationals Park with a 5-2 win.
Washington had taken a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and held it until Toronto tied the game in the sixth. The Blue Jays then broke it open, taking a 2-1 lead in the seventh before a three-run eighth put the game out of reach. The Nationals answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth, but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback. Toronto out-hit Washington 12-6 in the 2:59 contest, played in front of 20,044 fans.
Trey Yesavage picked up the win for Toronto, improving to 5-5, while Louis Varland notched his 23rd save of the season. Orlando Ribalta took the loss for Washington and fell to 0-2 as the Nationals’ relief corps was unable to hold the lead in the middle innings.
The loss drops Washington to 55-54 on the season. The Nationals now head to Atlanta for a series against the Braves beginning Thursday, July 30.
