ASHBURN, Va. — The pads came on and tempers flared Wednesday as the Washington Commanders held their sixth training camp practice of the summer at the BigBear.ai Performance Center, even as Jayden Daniels and the offense found a rhythm in red zone work.
Practice saw its first real chippiness of the summer. Running back Kaytron Allen scored on a red zone rep, and safety Nick Cross delivered a late hit on him after the whistle, sparking a scuffle. Elsewhere on the field, receiver Luke McCaffrey and cornerback Mike Sainristil had to be separated after a heated exchange of their own. It was Washington’s second day in pads, after the team wore them for the first time Monday following a Tuesday rest day for several veterans.
The offense had its moments in between the scuffles. Several receivers came down with touchdowns in red zone simulations, and Daniels connected with Terry McLaurin more than once on throws inside the 20. The two have continued building chemistry through the first week-plus of camp as Washington’s coaching staff leans on red zone work in the padded practices.
