WASHINGTON — Taylor Fritz survived a match-point scare to beat Alex Michelsen 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (6) in Friday’s quarterfinals at the Mubadala Citi DC Open, punching his ticket to Saturday’s semifinals at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park.
On the WTA side, Alexandra Eala continued her breakout week, knocking off second-seeded Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-4 for her sixth top-10 win of the season. The result sets up a first-ever meeting with Naomi Osaka, who advanced with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Elisabetta Cocciaretto, in Saturday’s semifinals as Eala chases her first WTA 500 final.
Ben Shelton’s run ended in the quarterfinals, upset by Alejandro Tabilo, while Brandon Nakashima knocked out top-seeded Alex de Minaur elsewhere in the men’s draw. NextGen ATP star Rafael Jodar also advanced. Saturday’s men’s semifinals are set: Fritz faces Jodar, and Nakashima takes on Tabilo.
The Mubadala Citi DC Open moves to semifinal action Saturday, Aug. 1, with the championship matches set for Sunday, Aug. 2 at Rock Creek Park.
