PHILADELPHIA — The Washington Nationals dropped their seventh straight game Tuesday night, shut out 5-0 by the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park as newly acquired Luis Arraez delivered two hits and two RBI in his debut for his new club.
Jesús Luzardo tossed eight shutout innings for Philadelphia, allowing just four hits and striking out seven on only 98 pitches — his longest outing of the season. Arraez, acquired from the San Francisco Giants a day earlier in a trade-deadline deal, batted cleanup and drove in Trea Turner twice: with a first-inning single and a third-inning double that capped a three-run frame. Turner finished with three hits, and Bryce Harper shifted from first base to right field for the first time since April 2022 to make room for Arraez in the infield, with Bryson Stott sliding to third and Alec Bohm to first.
Washington managed only a handful of baserunners against Luzardo behind opener Carson Palmquist and got no closer than the deficit Luzardo built through the middle innings. The Nationals also lost outfielder James Wood to a left oblique strain during the game, another blow for a lineup already searching for answers during the skid.
The loss dropped Washington to 55-59, fourth in the NL East, as the Nationals try to snap their longest losing streak of the season. They return home to Nationals Park on Friday, Aug. 7, to open a series against the Cincinnati Reds.
