FOCUS on NFL: Commanders at Dolphins, Preseason Game 2

MIAMI GARDENS, FL — Commanders vs. Dolphins Recap

The Washington Commanders faced off against the Miami Dolphins on August 17th in their second preseason game, coming up short in a 13-6 loss. Both teams used the game as an opportunity to assess depth, with most starters sitting out. Let’s break down what we saw on the field:

Tua Tagovailoa’s Perfect Drive

Tua made his preseason debut in this game, and he didn’t waste any time showing why he’s Miami’s franchise quarterback. After signing a massive contract extension, he stepped onto the field and delivered right away—going 5-for-5 on a 61-yard opening drive, capping it with a 13-yard touchdown pass to River Cracraft. It’s clear that Tua is locked in and ready for the regular season.

Jayden Daniels Continues to Impress

On Washington’s side, rookie QB Jayden Daniels showed more of the poise and precision that we’ve been hearing about in camp. He completed 10 of 12 passes for 78 yards and picked up another 13 yards on the ground in two series. While both of his drives ended in field goal attempts (one missed, one made), Daniels looked calm under pressure. This kid is making his case to be a future star in Washington.

Riley Patterson: A Mixed Night

Kicker Riley Patterson had a frustrating evening, going 2-for-4 on field goals. While he hit from 46 and 38 yards, the misses from 49 and 43 were momentum killers. With the competition at kicker heating up, Patterson will need to clean things up before the final roster cuts.

Defense: Good but Not Great

Washington’s defense had some solid moments, especially upfront, but the Dolphins managed to convert a couple of crucial fourth downs, including on their opening touchdown. Overall, the defense showed flashes, but the lapses in coverage allowed Miami to control key moments.

Backup Quarterbacks Try to Shine

Jeff Driskel and Trace McSorley shared the remaining snaps after Daniels left. Driskel put up a respectable 11-for-15, 82-yard performance, while McSorley had a rougher go, finishing 11-for-21 with 93 yards and an interception. McSorley’s final chance to tie the game ended on a fourth-down incompletion in the end zone.

Injury Update

  • Commanders: Jalen Harris limped off the field in the fourth quarter after making a tackle.

  • Dolphins: RB Chris Brooks exited with an upper-body injury, while C Sean Harlow left with a knee issue.

What’s Next?

Washington wraps up their preseason at home against the New England Patriots on August 25th.
