FOCUS on NFL: Commanders vs Patriots, Preseason Game 3

LANDOVER, MD — Commanders vs. Patriots Preseason Finale Recap

In the final preseason game, the Washington Commanders secured a 20-10 victory over the New England Patriots. Drake Maye, the Patriots’ rookie QB, completed 13-of-20 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown but struggled behind an offensive line that committed multiple penalties. Meanwhile, Washington’s backup QBs Jeff Driskel and Trace McSorley shared snaps, with Driskel completing 11-of-15 for 82 yards, while McSorley finished with 93 yards but threw an interception.

D-line Decisions Loom

The Commanders’ defensive line looked strong, with standout performances from Phidarian Mathis and John Ridgeway. Coach Dan Quinn praised their energy, stating, "The big guys were really pushing inside," which could influence final roster decisions. With Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne as the established starters, both Mathis and Ridgeway made a solid case for their inclusion in the 53-man roster.

Drake Maye Shows Flashes

Maye showed some of his potential, delivering a solid performance despite the offensive line’s struggles. His touchdown pass to Kevin Harris was the highlight of his night, but the unit was flagged eight times in the first half alone, including a play where Maye lost a shoe after being stepped on by a lineman.

Special Teams Evaluation

Cade York, recently acquired by Washington, made a great debut, hitting both of his field goal attempts from 34 and 33 yards. Patriots kicker Joey Slye, returning to Washington where he played last year, attempted two long field goals—a 64-yarder just before halftime and a 60-yarder at the end of the game—but missed both. Coach Quinn emphasized that York's kicks were a priority, noting, “We really wanted to make sure he had some chances to hit his kicks.”

Backup QB Battle

While Washington’s starters, including Jayden Daniels, were sitting out, the backup quarterbacks had a chance to shine. Jeff Driskel and Trace McSorley took turns leading the offense, with Driskel looking sharp. McSorley struggled, and his final drive ended on a fourth-down incompletion that sealed the win for Washington.

Injury Update

Jacoby Brissett of the Patriots started but left the game after suffering a shoulder injury. Patriots coach Jerod Mayo stated that Brissett would’ve continued playing if it had been a regular-season game but will be further evaluated.
