WASHINGTON — The Washington Wizards made it official Friday morning, formally announcing a four-year, $212.8 million contract extension for point guard Trae Young alongside general manager Will Dawkins at a Capital One Arena press conference.

Dawkins said the extension was the culmination of a pursuit that began well before Washington traded for Young this offseason. “He’s got a proven track record of just producing and making his teammates better,” Dawkins said. “That’s why we targeted him. That’s why we traded for him. And that’s ultimately why we worked to re-sign him.” The Wizards’ retooled roster also includes Anthony Davis, No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa and center DeAndre Ayton, and Dawkins said he built the roster around multiple shot creators so the offense wouldn’t have to run through Young alone.

Young, 27, said he’s ready to be the best version of himself in Washington. “To be the best version of yourself, you got to be in the most comfortable spot for yourself,” Young said, adding that he chose to come back to D.C. to keep building on the next chapter of his career. The five-time All-Star arrives after a decorated run in Atlanta and is expected to start immediately for a Wizards team looking to return to playoff contention.

The four-year deal keeps Young in Washington through the 2029-30 season as the Wizards turn their attention to training camp and the start of a new era in D.C.
